Now on Sale! Baby Needs a New Pair of Shoes by Lauren Baratz-Logsted Self-Publishing: Should You Tell Literary Agents and Editors About Your Self-Published Book? by Ronnie Smith Listing your self-published book in the writing bio section of your cover or query letter may not be the best idea when you're trying to impress literary agents and editors. Before you mention your self-published book or books, you need to be certain you're not doing more harm than good.Finishing a book is a huge achievement- self-publishing a novel or book manuscript can also be an accomplishment worthy of real celebration and joy. However, unless your project has been exceptionally successful, you could shoot yourself in the foot if you mention your self-published book in your cover or query letters to literary agents and editors. Here are a few possibilities to consider before announcing your self-publications in your query and cover letters. Practice books. Publishing professionals know that it can take a few tries before a new writer is able to master the many complexities of writing a full-length book. Although you may adore your first few novels, a literary agent will likely look at them as "practice" books, not necessarily as fresh, high-quality projects that reach the top percentile. Practice books are important life achievements, but they are not to be confused with important publishing credits worthy of being listed in a query letter.Low sales = low enthusiasm. If you self-publish a book but then are not able to sell a significant number of copies, literary agents will have a hard time being excited about it, or they will presume that you have not done the necessary marketing. If you can't inspire readers' enthusiasm, an editor may doubt that you can inspire his/her enthusiasm. Negative Presumptions. Some self-published novels have done quite well. Many have become wildly popular, but keep in mind that they are the exception to the rule. The fact remains that the quality of self-published novels as a whole doesn't compare to the quality of novels that have been vetted and edited at traditional publishing houses. In other words, if you align yourself with the legions of others who have self-published, agents may presume your writing is weak. Also, agents may worry that you no longer hold all rights to your self-published book if you don't specify otherwise. Cutting Corners. Many people self-publish because they think it's easier than dealing with the submission process (though that's not always the case). There's some concern that a writer who has self-published is a writer who would rather settle for second-best and cut corners than go the distance. Low sales indicate lackluster motivation. Literary agents want to work with passionate, driven people who will stop at nothing to reach their dreams of being successful writers. *For more http://www.fictionf actor.com/ guests/self- publishing. html Get Published! SHALLA MINGLES with VICTORe of the band, Tokadiscos “Tokadiscos Reggaes”
by Shalla DeGuzman
First off, who’s VICTORe? Well, I was born and have lived in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico my whole life, I’m 25. I’m the youngest of a family of five (My two older sisters always enjoyed to make me cry when I was a kid). I Studied Industrial Engineering here in Ensenada and I’m going thru a Professional Certificate in Construction Safety in the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). I like to learn new things in all aspects of life. Love roller coasters, rappel and willing to skydive as soon as I have some spare money. Recently I learned to scuba dive, and has become my new passion, I just love it =) Ensenada is a quite small town, and that’s what I like about it, it’s not crowded and if you want to see big concerts or the advantages of a big city, you just need to travel an hour to the north to get to Tijuana or cross the border and get to San Diego. We started Tokadiscos eight years ago (almost nine) with the idea of making music that we enjoy. There were no other bands in the town that would do anything like it. A curse of the small town is that 98% of the bands follow the trends instead of creating something because you feel it. Back then, everyone was playing like Nirvana, then Deftones, then Blink 182 and now Emo. I don’t mean to be rude to any style of music (I like Emo), but after the trend is over you can tell who actually liked it and who is migrating to a new trend. Pretty much like a mainstream Mexican band called Panda. So far we have two records and are working on the third one. The band hasn’t given us enough money to live yet, but has given us a lot of personal satisfaction. We’ve been in many places around Mexico and a few important cities in the US (San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix and Chicago). Roco and Pato form Maldita Vecindad recorded in our first record and we have some surprises for the next one. Shalla: Hello VICTORe, nice band. Have you been performing long? VICTORe: I’ve been playing for about ten years right now. I started a the School band and then moved to make my own music with some friends. In the band there are some older guys that have a longer road and some younger ones that have way less. We as a band as I said we have almost nine years and counting. Shalla: When did you know you wanted to be a musician? VICTORe: When I was about four years old I wanted to be a police officer (how wrong was I? Jaja), fireman or an Ice Cream Seller (I could get all the Ice Cream I could eat, can you imagine that???). After that I wanted to be a Professional Basketball player. As every average kid I used to play to be a singer with the comb as microphone, played the Air guitar since I started listening alternative music about the age of ten. But was at the age of 15 when I got my hands into a real drum set that I knew that I wouldn’t be able to drop the drumsticks anymore. Shalla: Which musical instruments do you play? What’s your favorite musical instrument? Did you take music lessons or just learned on your own? VICTORe: I Love and have respect for all instruments. But my passion is all kind of percussion. I play drums most of my time, but I play a little (very little jaja)of congas, guitar, bass and trumpet. Shalla: Do you play the drums? Is it hard to play the drums? VICTORe: Yes, Is as hard as any other instrument. There’s no hard or easy instrument. Drums attract most common people because they think it’s just hit, hit, hit. The truth is that anyone can play an instrument as long as you dedicate enough (a lot) time to practice really slow and then gain speed. It becomes a second nature, like breathing, you never think about it, but do it all the time. When you start you only focus in that specific rhythm and any single distraction takes you out of the beat. But as you keep doing it, you can talk, sing, or even think about the after party and keep playing without even think about it. Shalla: Do you write your own music? What’s your inspiration? VICTORe: We as a band write our own music. I personally only work with the arrangements. Most of the time Tozzy (lead singer) comes to a rehearsal with an idea and we all together work it out. As I told you, our ages are quite spread (from 17 to 31), so we all have different influences and all put a little of ourselves into the songs. Shalla: Any tips for other musicians on how to get your music out there? VICTORe: Well, forget about the record companies, the future of music is on-line. Make your own demos, records, and try to get it to all the audience possible. If they like your music they’ll start to ask for your shows and that’s how you start touring. Shalla: Oh, and can we feature more of your music on SHALLA Magazine? (we can put a link to it or something) VICTORe: Well, you can find our music, videos or info in: Music.com myspace.com/tokadiscos tokadiscos.com youtube.com/profile?user=victoretkd

SHALLA CHATS with Robert Gregory Browne “Crafting Characters that Jump Off the Page”
by Shalla DeGuzman
First of all, who ’s Robert?
Robert Gregory Browne began his career by selling a two-part mystery story, "Nothing but the Cold Wind," to EasyRiders magazine. Shortly thereafter, he won the prestigious Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting, sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and found himself in the Hollywood fast lane.
His first screenplay, Low Tide, was picked up for production by Showtime only to be shelved after two years of “development hell.” On staff with Fox Kids/Saban, he wrote the hit animated TV show Diabolik and Spider-man Unlimited, then turned his back on the business to return to writing fiction. The result is the February release of Kiss Her Goodbye, the first of a two-book deal with St. Martin's Press. Robert recently signed another two-book deal with SMP.
New York Times bestseller Gayle Lynds (The Last Spymaster) calls Kiss Her Goodbye, "A first-rate novel that will glue you to your chair until you finish the last satisfying word." And Tess Gerritsen ( The Mephisto Club) declares it "A smashing good read."Shalla: Hello Robert. Congratulations on the success of Kiss Her Goodbye--looks like a winner--and you winning prestigious Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting, what a great accomplishment.
Robert: Thanks, Shalla. It's been awhile since I won the Nicholl, but it certainly changed my life. For about a month after I won, my phone rang off the hook – agents and producers asking to read my script. After years of dreaming about it, I had finally arrived. It was an amazing experience. Shalla: Please tell us about your two-part mystery story, "Nothing but the Cold Wind," that was published in EasyRiders magazine. How long have you been writing short fiction before it got published?
Robert: That story was actually one of the first short stories I'd ever completed. I'd had a few false starts and was mostly concentrating on music at the time – my second love – but suddenly had this idea for a “biker” mystery pop into my head and I figured, what the hell, I'll see if I can sell it to EasyRiders.
I sent them a draft and they turned it down. Then, a couple of years later, I decided to trim it and send it to them again. This time they went for it. Published it as a two-parter.
Have a Great Summer!

SHALLA CHATS with Alice Andrews
“Biofiction Introduced”
by
Shalla DeGuzman
First of all, who’s Alice?
Alice teaches psychology with an evolutionary lens at the State University of New York at New Paltz, and is the editor/publisher of Entelechy: Mind & Culture, an evolutionarily-informed interdisciplinary online journal. She is also the author of Trine Erotic, a novel that explores evolutionary psychology and other behavioral science themes.
Alice is currently working on a book (based on her essay with the same title, published at Metanexus) called An Evolutionary Mind
What does Entelechy publish?
Heard of BIOFICTION?
Biofiction is not a neologism. (See below for its other uses and meanings.) In the sense that I am using it, however, it is new; it refers to fiction or creative nonfiction that uses biological, neurological, psychological and/or evolutionary language and/or lenses. That is, a work of biofiction might explicitly deal with biological and /or evolutionary ideas, or it might incorporate biolanguage (see below). It may also do both, as my writing often, but not always, does.
For a while I used the term evolutionary fiction when writing about my own fiction and that of some others; but I soon realized that that term was too limiting (though I still use it in specific instances). At the same time that I felt evolutionary fiction was too restrictive, I was engaged in thinking about literature from a Darwinian and cognitive perspective and doing so primarily through a list called biopoets. -Alice Andrews, editor, Entelechy: Mind & Culture

Lounge
How low will women go for ‘love’? Some women will hit rock bottom; but others will continue to dig. This is a tale about the diggers—and their ultimate redemption. Three emotionally wounded women: Eva James, an entertainment publicist in love with her only client; Fawn LaFollette, an accidental porn star; and Drusilla Vidal a prosecutor in lust with a convict; share an embarrassing secret: Their men are literally sexing them stupid. Time and again the women get entangled in compromising positions, erotic mishaps and sexual indiscretions, that is, until a renegade sex therapist offers the ultimate plot for revenge: Sexual independence. Armed with their battery operated boyfriends in tow, the women join forces to create Multiple Orgasms On Demand, and their official playhouse, The M.O.O.D. Lounge, is born. Part group therapy, part adult toy party, The M.O.O.D. Lounge offers a first-class tour of decadence and delight. Welcome to The M.O.O.D. Lounge. Come as you are. Come all you want.
